Omega 3 Fish Oil - Krill Oil - When Should There Be A Fish Smell?

Fish oil is a bona fide source of Omega 3 fatty acids as is krill. Both krill and fish act as depository sources of these vitafats. These essential nutrients are made by microorganisms which in turn are ingested by shrimp-like sea creatures called krill. The vitafats are moved up the food chain when fish eat the krill. Finally, the nutrients make it to the top of the food chain when humans take them in the form of fish or supplements.

Only certain fish are good sources of these dietary fats. Tuna, mackerel and the New Zealand Hoki fish are examples of fish varieties that are known to contain high amounts of these fats.

Krill is also an excellent source of these nutrients. A recent television commercial touted the importance of krill for its concentration of Omega 3 and its lack of the rancid smell which often accompanies Omega 3 supplements. It is not the krill that make the fatty acids odor-free. Instead, it is the preparation. Unless the oil is fresh, processors will often resort to treating the it in a way that produces the trans-fat component. This is accomplished in much the same way as we see with processed corn. The end result is a trans fat and an altered omega fat. The krill commercial should alert us to the possibility that the product is being altered to reduce the smell and extend its shelf life.

That is not to say that a fishy smell is good. Fats breakdown and become rancid. This is the major reason for that peculiar smell with any fat product and particularly with omega 3 supplements.

Therefore, the issue of the smell is not the source of the oil, but its freshness. Where do you get the freshness without the trans fat processing? A New Zealand company has acquired a reputation for producing a supplement that is fresh and stabilized to eliminate the rancid smell while preserving the bio-availability of the omega 3 fatty acids.

Omega 3 fatty acids are vitafats. In a way similar to vitamins, these nutrients are essential for healthy cells. Many people now recognize the importance of omega 3 supplements. Fish are a major source of supplemental omega 3 fatty acids. Krill oil also is a good source. But as you can see, it is not the point in the food chain that is important. Rather, it is what happens to the oil when it is being processed.
